Nuclear Trains in Birmingham Suburbs: Jenny’s Letter to the Birmingham Mail

On the 17 November The Birmingham Mail published a follow up on the original story on nuclear trains seen in Birmingham suburbs.  This was initially triggered by the sighting of an untimetabled train unusually going through Bournville.  (See our previous post for the fuller story) We have received this, following, letter text from former West Midlands CND Chair Jenny Maxwell.  She is also sending this to The Birmingham Mail

Dear Editor

There has clearly been a misunderstanding between your reporter and David Polden (Rise in nuclear waste trains running through Birmingham, 17.11.10).

I have been interested in the transportation of spent nuclear fuel rods through Birmingham for many years, during which I have had frequent communication with David.

There has been no increase in the frequency of the nuclear trains through Birmingham in recent years, and trains from the Sizewell nuclear power station in Suffolk come no nearer to Birmingham than Rugby.  The trains that come through Birmingham have come from the nuclear power stations at Hinkley Point in Somerset, and Oldbury in Gloucestershire.

With the proposed building of new nuclear power stations, this lethal traffic is likely to continue for many years to come.

Yours sincerely

Jenny Maxwell
