Cut Trident, Save £100 Billion

Cut Trident, Save £100 Billion

Danny Alexander’s new review finally says it.  We don’t need to spend 100 billion on replacing Trident.

[…] given all the financial pressures across the whole of the public sector, all the things the government has to do and wants to pay for, and all the pressures in different areas, I just think the idea that somehow, out of thin air, we can carve a multibillion pocket to pay for this, that is not financially realistic. (Danny Alexander, The Guardian, 22 January, 2013)

That this House notes the function of the Trident Alternatives Review is to assist the public debate in assessing the case for alternative systems to Trident; believes this will make an excellent and vital contribution to an open national debate about the future of the UK’s nuclear weapons programme; and urges the fullest publication of the Review to ensure the most informed discussion on this issue.
